I'm trying to get my upper and lower limits above and below the summation sign without going into display mode, because that puts it in the middle of the page and it's too big. I'm currently using: $\sum^V_{k=1}$, which is an in-line style. I'm trying to get the limits of V and k=1 above and below the summation sign. Thanks for the help Charle to write the index n on the right side of the sum symbol, while the limits of the summation remain above and below. • I too, when I began to use TeX, tried to set limits for sums above and below also in in-line formulas, but I soon realized that it's wrong: two white bands separated that line from the next ones. For that very reason the symbols for summation and integral are set in two different sizes: a smaller one for in-line formulas, a larger one for displayed formulas that don't have spacing constraints
• Welcome to the forum, sure there is a way. The standard classes are very old, one could argue that they are full of spaghetti code.
